Ze worden ook beschouwd als de voorlopers van techno en New Beat. Front 242 werd opgericht in 1981 in Aarschot door Daniel Bresanutti en Dirk Bergen. Hun eerste single was Principles. Patrick Codenys en Jean-Luc De Meyer van de groep Under Viewer kwamen erbij in 1982. De volgende single, U-Men, kwam uit in 1982, gevolgd door het eerste album Geography in 1983. In 1983 verliet Dirk Bergen de band en hij werd vervangen door Richard Jonckheere (pseudoniem Richard 23). Front 242 brak vervolgens door in België, en hun volgende single No Comment was de eerste onder de noemer "Electronic Body Music". Ze zorgden wel voor enige controverse, door hun paramilitaire looks waarmee ze ook live de mensen overdonderden. Als gevolg daarvan werden ze door sommigen als extreem-rechts bestempeld, iets wat de band altijd met klem heeft ontkend. Hun grootste succes scoorden ze met het nummer Headhunter en de bijhorende videoclip, geregisseerd door Anton Corbijn. Het bijhorende album Front by Front wordt doorgaans als hun beste beschouwd.
